State of the Site: 2007

This probably goes in the “who cares” or “whatever” category of stuff posted this year…. but it’s MY BLOG, so you have to at least scroll or (if you’re reading my RSS FEED, then you have to delete this)!

Its interesting to look at how this website fluctuates in visitors and traffic. Utah Tech Jobs registered its first post on May 15, 2005 with “Come on, Move me” a post about how your resume should cause recruiters who look at it to want to take action, not just put it in a pile.

Looking at the graphs below, its fun to see where the traffic was, and when.

  • In mid summer 2006, I launched a job board section of this site that pulled jobs from various boards via the Indeed API. That not only pulled in some additional traffic, but “page loads” was high as people had to surf through results.
  • I’ve since stopped paying attention to that part of the site, though it has always been the biggest draw (in case the huge spike in numbers doesn’t tell you anything). That’s going back on the to-do list.
  • Overall, traffic has evened out over time, which is to be expected.
  • Looking at 2007 over 2006 numbers shows that the readerstream is fairly constant. The ebb and flow is natural, and since this is a biz blog, my traffic stream usually spikes on Mondays and Fridays a bit (likely right after those incredible, motivational staff meetings people love so much) when I believe people are most-likely looking for a new job.
  • Traffic dies almost completely over the weekends, which is kinda interesting.
  • In October of this year, I got a boost when my all-time most-popular post “Why do Geeks Hate Recruiters” got tossed around the recruit-o-sphere and blogged about by Jim Stroud and others.
  • Two other web properties I desperately need to do something more with are UtahConversations.com and UtahTechTalent.com. Any thoughts or takers?

In other interesting news, I was nominated by RecruitingBlogs.com as one of the best 3rd Party Recruiting blogs in the entire known universe for 2007! That’s pretty cool. Odd thing is, I was working hard to finish my year (you know, at my job) when the announcement came out, so (smacks self in forehead) I didn’t even tell anyone! Good thing MN Headhunter did and I was mentioned as an “also ran” on The Recruiting Animal’s weekly talk-show (can’t find show link at the moment).
