VOIP Me

We’re trying out a Voice Over IP (VoIP) service for our local phone at our new home. Installation was a snap and things are going well so far. I would have thought that I’d have made this leap a long time ago (I’ve been thinking about it for a long time) but I’ve been leery of leaving POTS. As encrusted in bureaucracy as Ma Bell-Generation phone companies are, they do have one thing for sure–reliability… you know what to expect. This seemed to be good and bad for me. Either it works right all the time, or if something goes wrong, it will almost always be wrong.

The only downside so far is that we had to give up our old phone number because we were moving homes. The process to switch takes at least 20 days (read: encrusted bureaucracy) and we would have had to pay $25 to transfer our service (Comcast was cheaper to transfer, including an on-site visit, Qwest just would reprogram it from their home-office, a process that still required 4 working days!) and then continue to pay for our phone service for the whole month until Qwest decided to divulge our local number.

We calculated it, and determined it was worth saving more than $100.00 in monthly-fees and a transfer charge to go through the pain of losing our old number.
